Undergraduate summer internships

Summer internships offer 2nd and 3rd year undergraduate students the opportunity to gain experience in working as a scientific researcher. An internship typically involves a student carrying out an 8 to 10 week research project supervised by a member of the academic staff. Students holding a summer internship are paid around £175 per week over the course of the project.

Any 2nd or 3rd year student interested in carrying out a summer internship should contact a member of academic staff working in the proposed research area to discuss funding and supervision.

There are several possible sources of funding, described below.

Funding

University of St Andrews

Applications for the University of St Andrews Undergraduate Research Internship program are made by students themselves. Usually the student would write the application with the assistance of a member of the academic staff who has agreed to supervise the project.

This scheme was run for the first time in 2007-2008 where 20 internships were available. See the University Student Handbook for further information.

EPSRC

The EPSRC Vacation Bursaries scheme is managed by the University and applications take the same form as with the University of St Andrews Undergraduate Research Internship program. Project proposals for an EPSRC Vacation Bursary must fall within the remit of the EPSRC.

Internships with a research group

Students interested in taking up an internship should speak to a member of staff with research interests related to the proposed project.

Distributed Systems Architecture Research Group

The Distributed Systems Architecture Research Group has been successful in obtaining funding for 1 or more summer internships per year for the past 6 years. See the DSARG web site for further information.
