Someone completely different

"A good laugh", "A well designed site", "Made me want to return, again and again"... These are just some of the things that haven't been written about this site. You are probably here because you have clicked on a mistyped link somewhere on the web and you have accidentally loaded up the personal website of Alan W. F. Boyd. Unlucky you.

About me

My name is Alan Boyd and I'm a PhD student at the University of St. Andrews. Born on May 4th 1983 (so you know when to send expensive gifts). I live in the city of Edinburgh and spend most of my time working with Computers as part of my PhD, which I have just submitted.

The subtitle

The subtitle is a nod to Monty Python, who have provided me with many hours of entertainment.

My project

I have just submitted my PhD, which was sponsored by EPSRC as part of the DIAS-MC (Design, Implementation and Adaption of Sensor Networks through Multidimensional Co-design) project. I have been looking at the use of routing protocols to maintain high (source, sink) connectivity for as long as possible in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs).

My software

The vast majority of my software is both free and open source.

NodeSim is a Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) simulator written in Java.

jPatcher can be used to create multiplatform, executable patch programs that convert one file to another file.

ColourMap is a program used for displaying positional data is a 2D coloured graph. These are commonly used to produce "heat maps".

AegisQuest is a live-action 3D RPG 'television' show that I've produced as part of a group. I wrote the software for the show, which consists of a 3D client/server content-management and game system. I'm hoping to open-source the code at some time in the future. Watch this space...

XSync is a Mac OS X program I produced several years ago to synchronise folders and files across multiple locations.

My PhD, or at least the code, schemas and tools I built for it, are available on sourceforge. This is not a program per se and will be of little interest to anyone without a strong programming (and WSNs) background.
