NEWS
Dr Zeynep Kiziltan
(March 8, 2004) On Friday, March 5, Zeynep successfully defended
her PhD thesis at Uppsala.
Her external examiners were Peter van Beek and Pedro Meseguer.
Her PhD thesis, "Symmetry Breaking Ordering Constraints", is available from Uppsala's web pages.
Many congratulations to Zeynep.
Karen Petrie and Tien Ba Dinh
(July 4, 2003) Karen Petrie and Tien Ba Dinh, students of Barbara Smith at Huddersfield, are taking part in NASA's summer internship programme.
They are two of only three successful applicants from the UK, and their
success has featured in a number of press articles, for example today in the
Fife Herald, as well as on Radio Leeds.
Dr Dan Black
(March 12, 2003) Yesterday, Dan Black successfully defended
his PhD thesis at Leeds University, and he has been awarded the degree
subject to minor corrections.
His supervisor was Barbara Smith and external examiner was Patrick Prosser.

Kostas Stergiou
(February 25, 2003) Yesterday, Kostas Stergiou started a
lectureship at the University of the Aegean, following military
service. We are delighted to welcome Kostas back as a member of the
APES group.
Radiotherapy Research
(January 30, 2003) While not directly related to his APES
research, Tom Kelsey's research of the effect of radiotherapy on
women's fertility is being featured in a number of news sites,
for example
at
Nature Science Update, and
BBC News Online.
Dr Brahim Hnich
(January 20, 2003) Many congratulations to Brahim Hnich, who
passed his PhD viva last Friday. His thesis jury included Mark Wallace
and Edward Tsang. Brahim joined APES in Cork last year.
EPSRC Peer Review College
(November 19, 2002) Ian Gent, Patrick Prosser, and Barbara Smith
have all been invited to join EPSRC's new Peer Review College, the body
which helps EPSRC to allocate funding in the UK. Barbara, Patrick and
Toby Walsh are current members of the College.
Ian Miguel
(October 1, 2002) Many congratulations to Ian,
who has been given the
BCS/CPHC Distinguished Dissertation award, one of only three in the UK
for the whole of Computer Science.

Ian Gent
(October 1, 2002) Ian has today been promoted to Reader at the
University of St Andrews. This is a part time appointment, as Ian
spends the other half of the working week with his daughter.
Dr Colin Layfield
(September 5, 2002) Colin had his PhD viva yesterday and we are happy
to announce
that he was awarded the PhD (subject to minor corrections, as usual). Prof
Peter Cowling of Bradford was the external examiner.
Colin was supervised by Barbara Smith at Leeds, and now works for CODA in Harrogate.
APES Wedding
(July 20, 2002) Andrew Rowley
and Gayle Stirling were married today in Arbirlot, near Arbroath.

Kostas Stergiou
(July 13, 2002) We are delighted that Kostas Stergiou has been
elected a lecturer at the
Department of Information and Communication Systems
of the Aegean University, Samos, from March 2003.
APES PhD's online
(July 12, 2002) Josh Singer's PhD thesis is now on-line, from
the
2001 publications page.
Prof Toby Walsh
(June 24, 2002) Many congratulations to Toby Walsh, who
is taking up a
position
as research professor at University College Cork.
The Science Foundation
Ireland (SFI) recently awarded him 1.5 MEuro to set up a research group
at the Cork Constraint Computation Centre (4C). He has also taken on
the
position of deputy director of the 4C lab, which itself was set up by a
6 MEuro SFI award to Gene Freuder.
Dr Elias Oliveira
(September 27, 2001) Many congratulations to Elias, who successfully
defended his thesis yesterday, subject to minor corrections.

Dr Ian Miguel
(July 4, 2001) Yesterday, Ian Miguel successfully defended his
PhD thesis subject to minor corrections. Many congratulations to Ian,
who joined APES as a researcher at York last year.
Dr Josh Singer
(April 28, 2001) We are delighted that Josh Singer successfully
defended his PhD thesis yesterday, subject only to minor corrections.
Our congratulations to Josh.
After a holiday in Latin America, Josh has started work at Parc Technologies,
joining Stuart Grant as an APES alumnus there.
Dr Kostas Stergiou
(Feb 28, 2001) We are delighted that Kostas Stergiou has successfully
defended his PhD thesis today. Many congratulations for this well deserved
result, and thanks to Christian Bessiere for conducting an excellent examination.
