I am a Lecturer in the School of Computer Science (2nd in the UK rankings) at the University of St Andrews, and also

Many classic results in science have come from the analysis of existing knowledge already available in the open literature. A classic example is Mendeleev's proposal of the law of periodicity: the data on which the law depended were published throughout the chemical literature, in many languages and symbolic formulations. Most of my research effort is data-driven. I carefully integrate my own data with data extracted from published studies, and/or with data simulated from the descriptive statistics of sources in the literature. I then use advanced knowledge discovery techniques to identify predictive models, evaluate and validate these models, and generate hypotheses for testing by other researchers. My areas of research include:

I am looking for good candidates to supervise for PhD study in the broad area of data-driven science. If you would be interested in studying with me at St Andrews please send me your CV and some initial research ideas. Funding may be available for high quality candidates.
