FAQ

• How can I get hold of your papers?
  I keep most of them here. Contact me if you are looking for anything in particular.
• Why are you ignoring my e-mails?
  They have probably been chewed up by our Exchange server. Try sending from a different address, or try contacting me by a different method. If you have sent me a 10MB Word file written in Greek or Sanskrit (I am not joking), then I have ignored you on purpose. Jan 2013: due to travel and illness I have given up and declared e-mail bankruptcy. I have deleted everything in my INBOX as there was no way I would be able to catch up. So if you have sent me anything important recently, please resend.
• Will you give me <sensitive datum x> from the experimental data described in your paper?
  No. If it’s not on CRAWDAD, then we aren’t allowed to release it.
• Can I have a blurb about you for a seminar/grant/GeoCities site about computer scientists whose names start with ‘T’?
  Here’s a bio and a CV.
• I am an undergraduate student who wants to do a summer internship with you - will you fund me?
  No. I occasionally offer funded summer internships but they will be advertised. I ignore unsolicited requests as I receive far too many.
• I want to study Computer Science at St Andrews. Can you give me a place?
  We don’t give out places by e-mail; you have to apply through UCAS. But I am glad that you are considering coming here - please look at our Admissions web pages to find out more about applications and how to visit us.
• Can you fix my computer?
  Trust me, you don’t want me anywhere near your computer. My special powers mean that I can break it without even touching it.

• The School of Computer Science has funded 600th Anniversary PhD studentships for 2013 entry.
• I am co-editing a special issue of the International Journal of Human-Computer Studies on Privacy Methodologies in HCI. Please peruse the CFP.
• We have just started a new SICSA Cybersecurity group for those interested in (cyber)security/privacy/trust/etc…; sign up to the mailing list to keep informed.
• I have been promoted! I am a Senior Lecturer as of 1 August 2011.
• My student Greg won the Brendan Murphy Memorial Prize at MSN ‘11.

• I am always looking for good PhD students – see my research page for more. Funding is sometimes available, but this will typically be advertised through the School. Note that I do not have funding for overseas undergraduate internships – the numerous requests that I receive for these are ignored.
• I am our School’s Undergraduate Admissions Officer. If you are thinking about studying Computer Science at St Andrews, please look at the relevant School web pages and consider visiting us.
• We hold regular SCONE (SCOttish Networking Event) meetings for anyone who is interested in networking and systems. Our last meeting was in Edinburgh on 8 February but sign up to the mailing list to find out about the next one.
